Today we reviewed our real-life examples of heat transfer. Each student wrote about how ‘radiation’, ‘thermal conduction’ and ‘convection’ took place inside an oven when something was baking. One student even brought in a sample of the pound cake he made at home while ‘applying the pronciples of heat transfer’. Tonight, the students will write about another real-life example, this time an example of a place where the ‘greenhouse effect’ takes place.

Over the weekend, I would like the students to collect news articles and on-line information about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. This may be the worst environmental hazzard in United States history, and it also ties in with our weather unit. I would like students to bring in these items on of before Weds 6/2.

Today is the first of two days for math MCAS. We will not have regular classes for these two days, but there is a lot of science information for me to pass along to you.
The students took a test on the nervous system last Friday. Look for these to be sent home later this week, perhaps Thursday. Most of the students did well, but some had difficulty. The test was brief and really not that difficult. The items that were poorly done indicated to me that some students spent little time studynig.
We had the last part of our ‘cigarette program’ today during periods 6 and 7. We saw a video about a woman who eventually died from complications resulting from cigarette smoking. Have your son/daughter tell you about this video. It is powerful, and a true story. I believe this video and the anti-smoking program in the Arlington district really does keep many youngsters from smoking.
We will begin our weather unit on Wednesday. More information on that will be sent out soon.
Progress reports will be sent out Friday or Monday. These reports will be up-to-date and indicate just how your children are doing in science. there has been a lot of progress for many students. But unfortunately, some are getting into some end of the year distractions and not handing in work and/or not studying. Please review the progress report with your son/daughter.

Science notes 4/29/10

We are currently studying the nervous system and we will be studying the endocrine system. Today we watched a viedo on the nervous system and the brain. If you have a chance, ask your son/daughter to show you his/her class notes from today to tell you the important parts of the nervous system and brain.

The students have an assignment to work on. They are to hand in their ‘cigarette box’ on or before Monday May 3.

We will have a test on the nervous and endocrine systems on Friday, May 7. Students can begin to study by studying the worksheet packet they have for this week.

Today we learned about how cuts in the skin heal. You son/daughter should have drawings and notes about this in the science notebook.
Homework – “A Connective Crossword”. Students have a crosswor puzzle to complete that has important vocabulary from all of chapter 1.

We continued with our exploration of the layers of human skin and all the types of tissue that perform so mamy jobs. These are all hidden inside the skin, mostly inside the dermis layer!
Tonight’s Homework – Complete the worksheet with drawings and explanation of ‘functions’ for each type of skin tissue.

We revieweed the first draft of out ‘Muscle Pairs’ paragraphs today in class. The 610′s students appear to have a good understanding of how the arm and leg muscles work in pairs.

Homework: Students are to write a final copy of the paragraph. They will do this on lined paper. Also, they are encouraged to type this assignment. The drawing part of the assignment must include the names of three bones, two muscles and the tendon.

Also, We are looking for a donation of golf balls – one large shopping bagful. These are needed as part of Mr Mistler’s ‘project gadjet’.

Today we started our unit section on the Muscular system. Have your child share with you the class notes we did today and the Quick lab we did from p.13 in our current science book.

Homework – Do first draft of paragraph ‘Muscle Pairs’ in notebook.

Welcome back from February vacation! This week we are continuing to study the organ systems of the human body. In order to get back into the ‘swing of things’today we reviewed the types of body tissue anf the various orgna systems. Tonight’s homework is to answer the questions for the section review on p.11 in the science book. Work is to be done in student notebooks.

We are starting to discuss the skeletal system. The students have two new concept maps in their notebooks. Have Your child show you his/her notebook so that you can see how we are taking notes in class, and what material is being covered.

Homework – Students are to complete a worksheet that requires labels of 20 bones on a skeleton drawing. they will need to go ‘on line’ to find some of the answers.

Good morning,
We are just starting the 3rd term of the school year. We are beginning a new topic – Human Body Systems – and all students have been issued a textbook. There are several thoughts I wish to convey as we start the second half of the school year:
*There are some details that need to be taken care of – Tests need to be signed and returned. You should have already seen your child’s test. Also, the current book needs to be covered. Students have had several days to get tests signed and books covered. Unfortunately, some will need a detention today if they do not have these two things completed by today (as has been posted on the white board for several days).
This week I ahve reminded students that I have higher expectatins for them for the rest of the school year. The work will be slightly more difficult and there will be an increase in the amount of homework.
Students are urged, with parent support to come for extra help after school. I will be requiring some students to come after school if they are failing or doing poorly.
Lastly, I have higher expectations for student behavior. Students are to pay attention and participate appropriately in class. They are to do homework and heep the binders and notebooks in good order. As adults, we know how important study skills and positive attitude are, but I ask that you help me to teach these concepts to your children. I feel that they as important, perhaps more impotant, than sceince topics!
